Calling the album Sadgirl just made sense. Each song encapsulates a different mental health
struggle in my adult life. I’d be suffering these bouts of intense sadness that affected literally
everything I did, even writing and releasing music - my truest love! Relationships broke down,
calorific intake went up, days spent outside of my bed(room) were at an all-time low and I really
didn’t think I’d get out of it alive. I left London, took a reluctant break from music and moved back
to Yorkshire. It’s here that I discovered a cocktail of family, intense therapy and anti-depressants
actually works. As the fog cleared, melodies came back, lyrics that had been bottled, spewed out
of me and it just felt like the right time to write the debut album - talk about easing yourself back
in!
I wrote the majority of the record with James New, Paul Dixon (Fyfe) and Jamie Clarke (Sfven) -
the former being trusted longtime collaborators and the latter, a new friend around whom my
writing sings! I wanted to keep it in the family with Fyfe (Dixon) exec producing. There are no other
hands more capable than his to help bring the vision I had to life. Millennium era Madonna, The
Cardigans and Jamiroquai were key influences for us when designing the sonic landscape.
Achieving synergy is especially impressive on Paul’s part when you think the writing was heavily
influenced by country music. The marriage of Nashville-esque songwriting with this early 2000s
production style has fully revived me and my love of making music. Its something that genuinely
excites me and has resulted in me taking a more hands-on approach when it comes to sound
design.
If you’d have told me three years ago that I would be releasing my debut album, I’d have laughed
in your face. No way. I cannot fathom how we got here, but we did it. I’ve never been more proud
of anything in my entire life and cannot thank my collaborators enough for giving me the
confidence and toolkit to do this thing.
