Each song encapsulates a different mental health\u003cbr\u003estruggle in my adult life. I’d be suffering these bouts of intense sadness that affected literally\u003cbr\u003eeverything I did, even writing and releasing music - my truest love! Relationships broke down,\u003cbr\u003ecalorific intake went up, days spent outside of my bed(room) were at an all-time low and I really\u003cbr\u003edidn’t think I’d get out of it alive. I left London, took a reluctant break from music and moved back\u003cbr\u003eto Yorkshire. It’s here that I discovered a cocktail of family, intense therapy and anti-depressants\u003cbr\u003eactually works. As the fog cleared, melodies came back, lyrics that had been bottled, spewed out\u003cbr\u003eof me and it just felt like the right time to write the debut album - talk about easing yourself back\u003cbr\u003ein!\u003cbr\u003eI wrote the majority of the record with James New, Paul Dixon (Fyfe) and Jamie Clarke (Sfven) -\u003cbr\u003ethe former being trusted longtime collaborators and the latter, a new friend around whom my\u003cbr\u003ewriting sings! I wanted to keep it in the family with Fyfe (Dixon) exec producing. There are no other\u003cbr\u003ehands more capable than his to help bring the vision I had to life. Millennium era Madonna, The\u003cbr\u003eCardigans and Jamiroquai were key influences for us when designing the sonic landscape.\u003cbr\u003eAchieving synergy is especially impressive on Paul’s part when you think the writing was heavily\u003cbr\u003einfluenced by country music. The marriage of Nashville-esque songwriting with this early 2000s\u003cbr\u003eproduction style has fully revived me and my love of making music. Its something that genuinely\u003cbr\u003eexcites me and has resulted in me taking a more hands-on approach when it comes to sound\u003cbr\u003edesign.\u003cbr\u003eIf you’d have told me three years ago that I would be releasing my debut album, I’d have laughed\u003cbr\u003ein your face. The pub was named The Gem.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFast forward eight years and Jacklin, with three celebrated solo records under her belt – Don’t Let The Kids Win (2016), Crushing (2019), and PRE PLEASURE (2022) – was looking to make a fourth. With time on her hands – she was out of contract with her record label, was searching for a manager – she decided to make the record at home in Melbourne, something she’d never done before. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eShe called up an old drinking buddy Robert Muinos, owner of Rat Shack studios, which is located above The Gem, and brought in friends Jacob Diamond (guitar), Mimi Gilbert (bass), and Jess Elwood (drums). Recording happened in close quarters, in converted hotel room accommodation upstairs at the pub. As it was a residential bar, they couldn’t record late into the night for fear of bothering the neighbour and sound bleed was a glorious constraint: foot traffic to the hairdresser and the tattoo parlour next door, loud music from the bands and the kitchen crew downstairs. If anyone needed a break from the sessions, they would venture downstairs and watch a band playing. Jacklin and the band even played two unannounced shows there to try out the songs before recording them.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThey thought they’d smash out the record in two weeks, like she’d always done, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, it took nearly a year of tinkering to arrive at something Jacklin could get behind. “\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Gem\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e felt like a metaphor for the whole process, because a lot of it did feel like digging. I felt like I was doing it almost in the dark, just trusting I was going to find something.” It conjures images of excavation, of reinvention, of trusting your instincts and surrounding yourself with the people and things that make life worthwhile.
